Wheat Ale — wheat softness beyond hefeweizen
Wheat ale is a broad category for wheat beers that do not fit into the strict Bavarian Hefeweizen tradition. Here, wheat malt is a primary ingredient, but the rules end there — everything else depends on the brewer's approach.
Witbier is the Belgian representative — light, cloudy, with coriander and orange peel, refreshing and perfect for warm weather. American wheat ale is a cleaner and hoppier version, without the spices of a witbier, but with the softness of wheat. And modern craft breweries interpret wheat ale freely — from light session variants to more complex beers with fruity or hoppy accents.
What they all have in common is the texture — the soft, slightly creamy body that wheat imparts, and which makes these beers so drinkable and approachable.
