Strong Ale — when ale gains degrees and character

Strong ale is the category for beers that don't easily fit into one box — what they have in common is high alcohol content, full body, and a complex flavor profile. Here you will find beers that are too strong for an ordinary ale, but aren't exactly barley wine, aren't exactly Belgian quadrupel, and aren't exactly imperial stout — but something in between all of these.

Among the classic representatives is Wee Heavy (or Scotch Ale) — a Scottish strong ale with a deep malty character, notes of caramel, toffee and dried fruits, and a velvety richness that comes from long boiling. English Strong Ale, on the other hand, is the broader term for British strong ales — malty, warming, with moderate hop bitterness and a complexity that develops over time.

These beers are designed for slow sipping and attention. Some of them improve with age, others are perfect immediately. The common thread is that none of them are for rushing.
