Fruit Beer — the fruity side of craft beer
Fruit beer is perhaps the most diverse category in the craft world — and at the same time the most misunderstood. For many, "fruit beer" sounds like something sweet and unserious, but the reality is fundamentally different. Here you'll find some of the most complex, interesting, and difficult-to-brew beer styles — from centuries-old Belgian traditions to ultra-modern smoothie sour beers.
Belgian Classics — Kriek, Framboise and Fruit Lambic
Belgium has been brewing beer with fruit for hundreds of years. Traditional kriek (with sour cherries) and framboise (with raspberries) are made by adding whole fruits to spontaneously fermented lambic, which after months of aging acquires a complex, dry, and delicately tart character with a fruity aroma. This is fruit beer in its most authentic form — far from sweetness, close to the elegance of natural wine.
Berliner Weisse, Gose, and Fruited Sours
The modern craft world took sour styles and added fruit in a new way. Berliner Weisse with passion fruit or mango, Gose with orange or blackcurrant, fruited sour with berries — these beers are fresh, approachable, and perfect for warm weather. The acidity balances the fruit sweetness and creates surprisingly easy-drinking beers.
Smoothie Sour and Pastry Sour — Dessert in a Glass
At the other end of the spectrum are smoothie sour beers — rich, full-bodied, with a texture and taste that resemble a liquid fruit dessert. Here, fruits are not an accent, but a main ingredient — strawberries, bananas, coconut, passion fruit, vanilla are combined in beers that blur the line between drink and dessert. Pastry sour variants also add elements like marshmallow, yogurt, or granola — for those who want a truly different experience.
Fruit Ale and Fruited Ales
Not every fruit beer is sour. Fruit ale is a milder category where fruits are added to an ale base without pronounced acidity — the result is a palatable, aromatic beer with a subtle fruit character. This category also includes some of the most interesting beers from breweries like Labietis, which use local berries and herbs.
